What Should You Do After PRK Laser Eye Surgery? | UELC

What Should You Do After PRK Laser Eye Surgery?

Most people associate any type of surgery with an invasive procedure involving many risks, pain, and lengthy recovery time. However, laser eye surgery is different, particularly the Photorefractive Keratectomy, or PRK eye surgery.

Read on to learn why some people need PRK and find out what you should do after the procedure to aid your recovery.

When do Eye Surgeons Recommend PRK Laser Eye Surgery?

The following circumstances can make LASIK procedures less successful, which is why your eye surgeon may recommend a PRK treatment.

  • Insufficient corneal thickness.
  • Soft corneas that could get bent during the surgery.
  • A profession that comes with a higher risk of getting hit in the eyes.

What Should You Expect After PRK Eye Surgery?

  • For the First 24 Hours
As with any surgery, you may experience swelling, and your eyesight may seem to be blurry for a few hours, leading to disruption in your normal activities. This will fade, and the swelling usually subsides within 24 hours. However, you are not allowed to legally drive during this time which is why you should have a family member or friend take you home after the surgery.
  • For the Next Few Weeks After PRK Eye Surgery
You may experience a glare in your vision which is a common side effect of PRK. It subsides over three months, once you undergo regular treatment. It helps to keep your eyes lubricated to prevent them from becoming too dry. If you feel too much pain or irritation, it is best to consult your surgeon immediately.

Maximizing Recovery from PRK Laser Eye Treatment

Although PRK is not invasive, it is good to spend at least two days recovering from the procedure. It helps you to adhere to the following:

  • Take some time off work and regular activities.
  • Avoid anything that could strain your eyes including smartphones, televisions and laptops for 24 hours after surgery.
  • Visit your surgeon the next day for a consultation to assess your vision and the swelling.
  • Ensure there are no complications post-surgery.
  • Listen to and follow any advice your surgeon gives.

Things to Avoid After a PRK

  • Do not partake in rigorous exercise for a few days.
  • Avoid any eye makeup for at least a week after the surgery.
  • Do not rub your eyes even if they feel itchy.
  • Try to avoid getting shampoo or soap near your eyes.

Going Back to Work After PRK Surgery

It helps to take at least 2-3 days off from work and properly rest your eyes, particularly if you work with screens such as in an office job. Once you return to work, take regular breaks and avoid being near an air conditioning unit.

You will notice an improvement in your vision within the first couple of months from your laser eye treatment. You may have to go for a few routine check-ups every few months at first to ensure your eyes are healing well.
