Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK is a form of laser vision correction where a surgeon removes the cornea's surface layer, also known as the epithelium. They will then reshape the corneal bed with the laser, similarly to LASIK.
This specialized technique is usually reserved for patients whose cornea may be too thin to safely allow for the creation of the corneal flap essential for LASIK surgery. Sometimes, patients may come into UELC hoping to have LASIK surgery and are instead directed to PRK. This is an assessment that is made on a case-by-case basis.
Key similarities between PRK and LASIK surgery include:
Both are used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
Both are known to be equally safe procedures.
The visual results with both procedures are the same.
Before the Surgery
In preparation for PRK, please avoid the use of contact lenses for several days. Our eye surgeon will conduct various examinations to calculate and determine the proper course of treatment.
Immediately Before the Procedure
Before surgery, our specialists will prepare you with anesthetic drops to numb the eye.
During the Eye Surgery
Our expert eye surgeon will perform the procedure with utmost comfort, using the appropriate laser and other required technologies. UELC has state-of-the-art machines to ensure you receive the best results.
After the Laser Vision Correction
Post-surgery, you may experience sensitivity to light and slight discomfort immediately following treatment. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to observe and analyze your progress.
Your eligibility for Lasik will be determined upon your consultation. Patients with certain degenerative eye disorders, a history of aggressive scar formation post skin incision or autoimmune disorders (Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) are not eligible for surgery.
If you are considering laser eye surgery but fear that you may be too old, you’ll be pleased to know that there is no age limit. Once you’ve reached the minimum recommended age, you can undergo laser vision correction at any point in your life. While you are never too old for this procedure, there is a lower age limit requirement. It is not recommended for those under the age of 18, as their eyes are still developing, and their eyesight will likely continue to change as they age. After 18, surgery may be considered for those under 21 as long as they have had a consistent prescription for two or more years.
Topical Anesthetics (eye drops) are given to the patient. This aids in numbing the eye during the procedure so the patient feels no pain. When the vacuum ring is applied by the surgeon, there is a sensation of slight pressure experienced by the patient just before his/her vision fades away for a few moments. Both Laser and precision flap – making instrument don’t cause any pain. Many patients experience a mild sensation similar to wearing dirty contact lens or opening the eye in chlorinated water during a swim. These sensations subside after a few hours.
This operations entails quick visual recovery. The day of the surgery, most patients are able to attain good vision and find their eyes feel fairly normal. However, higher prescriptions can take up to two – three months to improve and attain the best vision. Adjustments to the surgery called enhancements can be done if necessary.
Lasik eye surgery is a popular, tried-and-true method for perfecting your vision and can help you leave your cumbersome glasses behind. Avoid fogging lenses during the winter, keeping up with frame styles, and pain on the bridge of your nose. Lasik surgery will take away these annoyances for good.
The surgery typically takes less than 10 minutes per eye and you can notice vision improvements as soon as the next day. Your vision will continue to improve over the next two weeks.
Both procedures are safe, comfortable and an effective solutions to many vision problems including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
Refractive Lens Exchange is virtually the same as cataract surgery, which is the most common surgical procedure in the world. After making small incisions in the cornea and using ultrasound to remove your natural lens, your surgeon inserts an intraocular lens (IOL) into the empty capsule.
RLE and LLE are lens-based refractive procedures (as opposed to Laser Vision Correction, which is cornea-based refractive procedures). RLE and LLE are recommended for patients who are over 40 years old and wish to reduce their dependence on reading glasses as a result of the ageing changes of the natural lens. Both procedures can improve conditions including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, as well as presbyopia.
UltraView ReLACS™ gives your surgeon the ability to create custom blade-free incisions in the cornea to make the oval shape of the cornea rounder. Reducing astigmatism improves your natural vision and can reduce your dependence on glasses.
UltraView ReLACS™ softens the hard cataract lens allowing your surgeon to remove it with greater ease and more importantly, reducing (or eliminating in some cases) the amount of ultrasound energy applied inside the eye. This results in less eye swelling, faster healing, and as suggested by a recent study1 a distinct visual benefit in those undergoing UltraView ReLACS™.
The first step of UltraView ReLACS™ is the acquisition of high-definition 3-D images of the eye using an OCT (optical coherence tomography). These images are then used to guide the femtosecond laser to make precise, surgeon-programmed incisions in the eye to enhance or replace several critical steps performed during cataract surgery.
Refractive Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (ReLACS) is a major breakthrough in the way cataract surgery is performed. This innovative technique brings an unprecedented level of precision and safety to a surgery that is traditionally performed manually by hand and with ultrasound energy.
Sagging skin that interrupts the contour of the upper eyelid and blocks one’s vision are signs of aging upper & lower lids. Other signs may include: 1. Puffiness or bags under the eyes; 2. Excess skin or fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid; 3. Drooping skin on the lower eyelids.
Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) are individuals with visible signs of aging around the eyes, such as drooping lids, puffiness, or excess skin that affects appearance or vision. Candidates should be in good health, have realistic expectations, and seek a long-term cosmetic solution. For those not seeing results with non-surgical methods, blepharoplasty offers a lasting option to refresh the eye area.
Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat to reduce drooping and improve vision, giving a more youthful look. Lower lid blepharoplasty targets puffiness and wrinkles under the eyes, reducing bags and creating a refreshed appearance. Both procedures can be combined for full rejuvenation.
Blepharoplasty results are typically long-lasting. For most patients, upper eyelid surgery can last 5-7 years or more, while lower eyelid surgery often provides permanent results, as the fat and skin removed rarely return. However, natural aging continues, and some may choose additional treatments later on.

PRK and LASIK are very similar, however, they are difference in one major way. During LASIK, a flap is created on the topmost layer of the cornea which allows the cornea to be reshaped before the flap is set back down. During PRK, on the other hand, the epithelium is removed to allow the laser to reshape the cornea. This tissue will grow back as part of the healing process.
Ideal candidates for PRK are people who would like to achieve a great vision without reliance on corrective lenses. They experience refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).
Eighteen years old and above is an ideal age range. Your general health and cornea must be healthy.
Some discomfort or mild pain can be expected for around 3 days following PRK Laser Vision Surgery. Over-the-counter pain medications are effective for pain management in most cases.

Photorefractive Keratectomy, commonly known as PRK surgery, is a type of laser eye surgery that is used to correct vision problems caused by refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. This surgical procedure involves reshaping the cornea, which is the clear dome-shaped outer layer of the eye, to improve visual acuity. PRK surgery was first introduced in the early 1980s and has been continuously improving over time.
Refractive error is a common eye disorder that occurs when the shape of the eye does not allow light to focus directly on the retina. This can result in blurry or distorted vision. The three most common types of refractive error are myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
During PRK surgery, an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. The surgeon first removes the thin outer layer of the corneal tissue, known as the epithelium. This layer grows back naturally within a few days after surgery. Then, the excimer laser is used to precisely remove small amounts of tissue from the underlying corneal tissue. The goal of the surgery is to change the shape of the cornea so that light can be properly focused on the retina, resulting in improved vision.
One of the main advantages of PRK surgery is that it does not involve creating a flap in the cornea like other types of laser eye surgeries such as LASIK. This makes it a better option for people with thinner corneas or other eye conditions that may make flap creation risky. PRK surgery also has a lower risk of complications compared to other forms of laser eye surgery.
One disadvantage of PRK surgery is that the recovery period can be longer than other laser eye surgeries. The outer layer of the cornea takes a few days to regenerate, during which time the patient may experience discomfort and blurry vision. It may take a few weeks for full recovery and visual acuity to be achieved.
The cost of PRK surgery varies depending on factors such as the location, the surgeon's fees, and any additional procedures required. On average, PRK surgery can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 per eye. In some cases, insurance may cover a portion of the cost if the surgery is deemed medically necessary.
PRK eye surgery is an effective and safe option for correcting refractive errors and improving vision. It offers advantages such as a lower risk of complications and suitability for patients who may not be eligible for other types of laser eye surgery. However, it may also have a longer recovery period compared to other procedures. It is important to consult with the experienced team at UELC to discuss the potential risks and benefits based on your individual needs and circumstances. If you have been struggling with vision problems caused by refractive errors, PRK surgery may be a viable solution to help you achieve clear and improved vision. Take the first step towards better vision and explore PRK surgery with UELC today. Your eyes deserve the best care and attention, so don't hesitate to invest in your visual health.
