Tips for a Smooth Recovery After Blepharoplasty

Excess and sagging skin around the eyes can leave you looking older and more tired. In some cases, extra skin on the upper lids can reduce or even block your peripheral vision. At UELC, we can perform a blepharoplasty, otherwise known as an eyelid lift, to rejuvenate your eyelids and help correct vision problems.

One of the most common questions we get from patients is how to help ensure a smooth recovery after blepharoplasty. The tips below can help you heal comfortably from the procedure and enjoy your new, more youthful appearance.

Clear Your Schedule for Your Recovery Time

After eyelid surgery, most people resume their normal activities in 10-14 days, but you should also be prepared to take some time off to let your eyelids heal. Covering your responsibilities in advance is an excellent way to speed your recovery. Examples include:

  • Asking your spouse, a relative, or a friend for additional help if you have small children.
  • Seeing if you can work from home during the days immediately following the surgery.
  • Preparing and freezing meals in advance to minimize prep time.
  • Getting labour-intensive tasks over with before the surgery, such as yard work, grocery shopping, or gardening.

Follow Self-Care Instructions

At UELC, we provide blepharoplasty patients with instructions for self-care at home. You’ll get this information before your surgery, so that you have time to assemble everything beforehand. Examples include:

  • Eye drops to prevent your eyes from drying
  • Cold compresses to reduce swelling
  • Gauze for gently dabbing on your incision if it oozes during healing

Protect the Eyelid Area

You will want to protect your eyes from sunlight and other elements like the wind, which can be drying and carry airborne dirt and debris. If you must go out during sunny weather, wear dark sunglasses with frames that cover your eyes from the sides and consider wearing a hat for extra protection. You should also follow your post-surgery instructions regarding sunscreen application.

Give Your Eyes a Rest

For at least a week after your surgery, let your eyes rest as much as possible. Limit the amount of time you spend checking email, reading books, or watching TV, as these activities can all cause dry eyes if performed for too long. Try listening to music, audiobooks, or podcasts and taking it easy on your vision.

Avoid Strenuous Activities

Avoid activities that increase blood flow to your eyes for the first two to four weeks following eyelid surgery. Examples include aerobics, jogging, and sports. You will also want to minimize daily activities that draw more blood into your eye area, such as bending and lifting heavy objects.

Give Up Smoking

Smoking can interfere with healing and increase your risk of infection after surgery. You can avoid these problems by stopping smoking at least six weeks before your procedure.

Recovery time after eyelid surgery is crucial. Your eyelids will be puffy, and you may experience some swelling and bruising, but this is all temporary. In about two weeks, the swelling will disappear, and you will start seeing a change. You’ll look younger, your eyes will be brighter, and you’ll feel great.
