How Botox Can Help with Sweating Problems

Sweating is a perfectly normal bodily reaction to help control temperature. However, some people sweat much more than is necessary or than they are comfortable with. This excessive sweating is known as hyperhidrosis and often affects an individual’s self-confidence and overall quality of life. Luckily, science has shown that Botox is an effective, quick, and non-invasive treatment for hyperhidrosis, and is Health Canada approved, meaning it is generally covered under most private health insurance plans

Botox Treatments for Hyperhidrosis

  • What Is Hyperhidrosis? – Hyperhidrosis is a medical disorder that involves the body producing more sweat than needed to regulate the body’s temperature. It can be excessive to the point of showing through clothing and often has the typical smell associated with sweat as well. Hyperhidrosis comes in two types. Focal, also known as primary, typically involves one location on the body. These often include the face (facial hyperhidrosis), feet (plantar hyperhidrosis), hands (palmar hyperhidrosis), and underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis). General hyperhidrosis, also known as secondary, affects the entire body and is a result of an underlying medical issue. Botox is typically used to treat axillary hyperhidrosis, or excessive underarm sweating.
  • Why Does the Botox Help? – Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis works in a simple manner. When injected into the area to be treated, the Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine in the site, which is the chemical responsible for signalling the sweat glands to produce sweat. With this chemical not sending information to the glands, they essentially shut off.
  • How Is the Treatment Performed? – During the treatment, small amounts of Botox are injected into the treatment area. The procedure is approximately 15 minutes long and requires no downtime afterwards. Gradual improvement will be seen within the first few weeks after the treatment is performed. The results are not permanent, and often vary between individuals. On average, the results tend to last approximately 6-7 months, so it is recommended to have the treatment performed bi-annually to maintain the results.
